Don’t Get Caught Up In Twitter’s Noise

by Nate on April 5, 2010

I love using Twitter…but it has become pretty chaotic these days.

has really become one big pitch-fest. It seems like every other message or tweet is one pitching a new business or product or whatever!

And with so many people doing it, you best believe that not only does it get pretty old but pretty annoying as well.

That is why you need to stand out from the pack!

So here is the golden rule to follow:

Don’t pitch ANYTHING on the first message!

Ever heard the phrase, “You never get a second chance at a first impression.”? You don’t want to come off as a spammer or as an individual that is only looking for a sale.

Your first message should be one that attempts to build a connection with your follower. That also goes for automatic direct messages that are sent to those who follow you.

You might want to start off by thanks them for following you and then you proceed to finding out something about them by asking them a question. You always want to ask a question. That will invoke conversation.

After the initial connection, then you can proceed to funnel your new follower to another website. But not until you’ve first established a connection!!

Personally, I like to get my new followers to my Facebook profile where I can interact with them even more and build a connection without the noise of Twitter. But it’s not til after I’ve built a connection with my follower that I try getting them to check out my “stuff”.

Remember, people are looking for people who they like and trust. And they are really not going to care how much you know until they know how much you care.

So go out there and start differentiating yourself from the masses!
